Do Crystals Like Attention? The Curious Magic of Rearranging Your Collection
Tucking Them In, Moving Them Around, and Other Lessons from a Crystal Shop
Shanny’s shelves: Each arrangement becomes a temporary neighborhood before the next shuffle begins.
Have you ever noticed that a crystal can sit quietly on a shelf for months, barely getting a second glance, only to suddenly become the center of attention after being moved?
We see it happen all the time at Metaphysically Me.
A piece that seemed almost blend into the background one week will be dusted, cleansed, relocated to a new shelf, or paired with different crystal companions, and suddenly everyone notices it. Customers pick it up. Conversations begin around it. Before long, it finds its new home.
Coincidence? Maybe.
But after years of working with crystals, Shannon and I have developed a different theory:
Energy flows where attention goes
One of my favorite examples happened recently with a stunning piece of labradorite. We were pointing it out to a couple, shifting ourselves to see the wide range of its flash of colors. The more we admired it, the brighter it seemed to become. Blues, golds, oranges and greens danced across its surface. It was as though the crystal was showing off.
We joked that it was winking at them. A few days later, the wife came back and purchased it as a Father's Day gift.
Did the crystal actually shine brighter? Maybe.
But I do know that when we slow down and truly pay attention to something, we often discover a beauty that was there all along.
See if you can spot the winking labradorite!
Our Living Shelves
If you've spent much time in our shop, you may have noticed that our crystal displays are always changing.
That's largely because Shannon is constantly rearranging them. And I mean constantly. In fact, she moves things around so often that we'll confidently tell a customer, "It's on the shelf over there," only to walk over and realize it isn't there anymore.
“Wait- where did the lepidolite go?”
Usually, the answer is that Shannon has lovingly found it a new home somewhere else in the store.
The displays evolve like living ecosystems.
As pieces sell, new ones arrive. Customers pick them up, turn them over, compare them, and place them back in different spots. New combinations emerge. Different colors begin speaking to one another. Entire shelves take on new personalities.
Our crystals are part of an ever-changing landscape offering new experiences to even the most familiar customer.
We Know When Someone Is Missing
One of the things that surprises people is how attached we become to the pieces in the shop.
Every crystal is hand-selected. We remember how we got them, where they came from and reminisce about the energy of that experience. We celebrate when they find homes, and sometimes we quietly wonder why another piece has chosen to stay with us a little longer.
Because we spend so much time with them, we notice when one is gone. Sometimes we even feel a little guilty that we did not warn the others working the shop the next day.
We'll walk past a display and immediately sense that something has changed. A familiar flash of color is missing. An empty space catches our eye. A crystal we've admired for months has finally found its person.
And yes, there have been times when we've asked a customer if we could take one last picture of a special piece before it leaves the shop. Not because we don't want it to go. Quite the opposite. We're excited that it found its home. We simply want to remember it.
Every crystal has a story.
Some stay for a few days. Some longer. All eventually continue their journey.
Crystal Care Matters
Whether you believe crystals hold energy or simply appreciate their beauty, there is something undeniably special about caring for them.
In our shop, we take both physical and energetic cleanliness seriously.
We dust them. We place them on selenite. We smoke cleanse them. We play the gong for them. At the end of the day, we often cover some with cloths, joking that we're "putting the crystals to sleep" for the night. Some people smile at these rituals, but we've found that intentional care changes the atmosphere of a space.
The crystals look brighter.
The displays feel more inviting.
The shop feels lighter.
And honestly, so do we.
A dusty crystal hidden in a forgotten corner rarely gets noticed, while a cared-for crystal practically introduces itself.
Try It Yourself
Take a look at your own collection. Is there a crystal that has been sitting in the same spot for months?
Try moving it. Dust it. Cleanse it. Place it in the moonlight. Hold it in your hands. Spend a few moments appreciating its colors, patterns, texture, and unique personality.
Then place it somewhere you'll see it often or even ask it where it wants to go. I have some that like my car or the bathroom. Shan has one that likes her refrigerator.
Pay attention to what happens. Notice its magic. Honor its energy. Have an ongoing relationship with it beyond the exciting day you brought it home. Crystals that are loved, cared for, admired, and noticed do not stay dormant for long.
So dust those shelves. Refresh your displays. Show your favorite pieces a little appreciation. And don't be surprised if one of them starts winking at you or tells you that it loves you once again.
Shan working her magic!
